Alumna Margit Schmitt ’10 has her first commercial exhibition The Memory of Architecture: Paintings & Drawings by Margit Schmitt and Kim Tschida Petters at the Raymond Avenue Gallery from February 18 - March 31, 2011.
The artists’ work is based on their own photographs of actual architectural structures. Much of Schmitt’s work has been inspired by the progressive Oak Grove School in Ojai, CA that she attended from kindergarten through 5th grade, and then again as a high school senior. The 150-acre campus with its modernist buildings nestled in wooded glens, created a lasting impression as evidenced by her monochromatic oil on canvas paintings, and reductive graphite on paper drawings where the architecture becomes negative space. Other works have been inspired by memories of buildings during a travel-work experience in Russia and India.
