Mike Reed: Drawn From Practice
July 24 - August 8, 2009
Mike Reed, a Minneapolis visual artist, has focused on the "artist at practice" for the past few years,
attending rehearsals throughout the Twin Cities where he has documented dancers, singers, musicians, directors, and even hair stylists.
His work explores how the concept of practice may be translated from one artist to another, fueling creative insight.
The results are beautiful visual interpretations that capture the linear gesture of effort, skill, and the resulting non-sentimental beauty
found in the pursuit of artistic excellence. Reed's own fluency shines though drawings that capture the determination and emotional intensity
of the artist at work: both as subject and draftsman. The exhibition includes original studies in addition to large-scale prints that lend drama
to the documented drama both compositionally and with regard to figurative content.
As Reed says, "The drawings should be taken literally; no lurking metaphors, no subliminal symbols, and no editorializing.
The idea of drawing at rehearsals was due to curiosity rather than deliberate intent.
I like being with other artists—simply being around accomplished performers gave me a psychic jolt that shocked my creative engine into high gear.
The drawings quickly evolved and new energy came out of every rehearsal session;
the evolution gathered momentum when I started getting positive feedback from the performers."
