Lloyd Menard was born in 1938. He received his MFA from the University of Illinois and his BFA from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. After a brief period teaching high school in Dubuque, Iowa, Lloyd became a faculty member in the Art Department at the University of South Dakota (USD) in 1972. Lloyd worked at The USD for over 30 years, where he taught printmaking, papermaking, and drawing. He remained at this institution for over thirty years, retiring in 2005.

He originated Frogman's Print & Paper Workshops, one of the most prestigious printmaking workshops in the world, and hosted annually each summer in the USD Department of Art. Lloyd also initiated the Visiting Artist Program in the USD Printmaking Department, which hosted the nation's top higher educational printmaking faculty each year.
